Readme for Personal Online Database

Please note that this package is intended for use on Linux operating system. This version does not need gcc 3.0.1 shared libaries installed. As a result, its size is bigger than the version using shared libraries. If you know you have gcc 3.0.1 on your web server, please go to www.ming-yi.org/download.html to download POD for Linux, shared version. The download page also has POD for FreeBSD and POD for Win32 (Win9x/00/NT), if those are what you are looking for. This Linux version was compiled by gcc 3.0.1 on Redhat Linux 7.2 (kernel 2.4.7) for i386.

How do I start using POD?

For Windows users, please read pod.chm file for POD documentation. pod.chm file contains everything you need to know about POD and is searchable. You can only view pod.chm on a Windows computer though.
For Unix users, there are two choices: 1. If your browser is Java enabled (most modern browsers are), please view the java based POD documentation. 2. If your browser is too old to view the java based documentation, you can try first to read the old version of documentation. However, since the old version is not updated since version 5.28 (POD version is now at 5.31), it is strongly recommended that you upgrade your browser so that you can view the java based documentation.
Both pod.chm and java based POD documentation contain the information for the files contained in this package, and how to install POD. Be sure to check out "Requirements", "Installation", and "User Manual (list of files)" sections prior to installation. If any problem occurs during installation, please check out "Trouble Shooting" section. After POD starts running for you, you will probably want to check out how to set various configuration settings for POD to take advantage of the rich set of features of POD by reading the "Administration of POD" section. Also check out how to customize the interface of your DB by reading the "User Manual (How-tos)" section.
Please note that the .exe files included in POD5_0.zip are for Win32 platforms. The executables for POD for Unix/Linux are included in the POD_shared.zip and POD_static.zip. Please go to http://www.ming-yi.org/download.html to download the correct version if you made a mistake.
